Today is International Human Rights Day

Today is International Human Rights Day, the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly in 1948.

This declaration recognizes that “everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution”. It affirms that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”, and “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.”

This forward-thinking document has created opportunities for improvements in human rights in many nations, although much remains to be done for the equality rights of sexual and gender minorities to fully recognized in all countries of the world.
