Jun 27, 2014 – Posted by West Welfare Society Territory: A new website has been launched to help the growing number of LGBT people seeking refugee status. The site is an auxiliary tool particularly aimed at governments and NGOs, which can use the platform to share their tried and tested approaches in protecting gay asylum seekers, as well as best practice in the face of increased persecution registered globally towards these minority groups. According to ORAM, the organisation managing the project, the need for online support comes from the fact that in recent months there has been a considerable rise in the number of asylum applications from LGBT people. One just has to think of the anti-gay laws that have been approved recently in Uganda. However, only a small percentage of people reveal their sexual orientation or gender identity, for fear of further marginalisation or rejection. Even when refugees admit their sexual orientation, many immigration agencies don’t know how to handle the situations well.
