Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has made the extraordinary claim that Gambians are faking being gay in order to claim asylum in European countries and has threatened anyone who does so with death.
‘Some people go to the West and claim they are gays and that their lives are at risk in The Gambia in order for them to be granted a stay in Europe,’ Jammeh said on Thursday according to APA.
‘If I catch them I will kill them.’
Jammeh said that those who did so were tarnishing The Gambia’s reputation and claimed that British authorities had developed a test to determine if a person was a genuine homosexual or not.
In 2008 Jammeh warned all homosexuals to flee the country or face death by beheading and Gambia punishes homosexuality with up to 14 years in prison.
Jammeh has previously labelled LGBTI people as ‘vermins’ and compared his fight against them to ‘fighting malaria-causing mosquitoes.’
‘As far as I am concerned, LGBT can only stand for Leprosy, Gonorrhoea, Bacteria and Tuberculosis; all of which are detrimental to human existence,’ he said in February. Continued
