On May 7, 2014 Metro reported: The Winnipeg Pride parade will see a refugee show his colours as Grand Marshall of this year’s parade.
Malek, who has asked to only use his first name, is a refugee from Iran who fled to Turkey when his boyfriend’s family found out about their relationship. The family threatened his life. He came to Canada in 2012.
“Malek is the living definition of what it means to be Without Borders, and it is for this reason that he will be the 2014 Grand Marshal for Pride Winnipeg’s 27th annual parade,” reads a statement from Pride Winnipeg.
The Honourary Youth Marshall title goes to Evan Maydaniuk, who was nominated by his former high school principal. Maydaniuk is credited for starting one of the city’s first Gay-Straight Alliances in a high school.
Reaching out Winnipeg was named the Honourary Community Group Marshal.
